    Marking scheme

    (a) (i) Q49:6 - 'O you who believe! If a sinner (fasiq) comes to you with news, verify it (tabayyanu), lest you harm a people in ignorance and become regretful over what you have done.' Amina forwarded unverified news and harmed Hawa's reputation; the verse requires her to ascertain the truth before sharing. (ii) Q49:12 - 'O you who believe! Avoid much suspicion (zann)... and do not spy, nor backbite one another.' Spreading the rumour amounts to ghibah (backbiting) and acting on suspicion, both of which are forbidden. (Accept also Q49:11 - do not ridicule/defame others or call by offensive nicknames; or Q49:10 - 'the believers are but brothers,' which calls for reconciliation.) (b) Any ONE: It breaks unity/brotherhood among students; it damages Hawa's reputation (dignity); it spreads mistrust; it can lead to unjust punishment of an innocent person. (2 marks for one well-explained consequence.)

    6 marks

During a school assembly, a Grade 9 learner posts on the class group that one of his classmates failed his exam because "he is just lazy and stupid." Another learner spreads a rumour, without checking, that the teacher was bribed. The class teacher uses Surah Al-Hujurat to address the incident.

    (6 marks)

    Marking scheme

    (a) From Q.49:11 Allah forbids: (i) ridiculing or mocking others, since the mocked person may be better than the one mocking; (ii) calling people by offensive nicknames/insulting names (e.g. calling the classmate "stupid"). (2 marks) (b) From Q.49:12: (i) Believers must avoid suspicion (zann), because some suspicion is sinful — the learner suspected/assumed the teacher was bribed without proof; (ii) Muslims must not spy on or backbite (ghibah) one another, for backbiting is likened to eating the flesh of one's dead brother — spreading the unverified rumour was backbiting and slander. (Pupils should also note Q.49:6: verify news from a sinful person lest you harm people in ignorance.) (4 marks)
