Marking scheme generator
A paper without a scheme is half a job, and a scheme written from memory the night before marking is where grading stops being consistent. Every paper PaperSetter generates comes with one that matches it.
What is in the scheme
- The answer, in the form the question asked for
- A question that asks for two reasons gets two, numbered. A question that asks for a unit gets the unit. Marking against an answer that does not match the command verb is how two teachers end up grading the same script differently.
- Marks split across the sub-parts
- On a structured question the marks are shown where they fall, so a part worth three does not get marked as though it were worth one.
- Working shown for multi-step maths
- The steps are there, not only the final figure, so you can award method marks to a learner who set the problem up correctly and slipped at the arithmetic.
- The same numbering as the paper
- Question 14(b) in the scheme is question 14(b) on the paper. It sounds obvious until you have marked from a scheme where it is not true.
Read the schemes before you decide
The practice pages show worked marking schemes against real questions, grade by grade and topic by topic. That is the honest way to judge whether a bank is worth setting a paper from.
Common questions
- Do I have to request the marking scheme separately?
- No. The exam paper and its marking scheme export together as two PDFs, so the scheme is never out of step with the paper you printed.
- What happens to the scheme if I edit a question?
- It follows the edit. Replace or change a question before exporting and the scheme reflects the paper as you actually set it.
- Does the scheme show working for mathematics?
- Yes. Multi-step answers show the steps rather than only the final figure, so method marks can be awarded fairly.
- Can I get the scheme again later in the term?
- Yes. Saved papers can be reopened and both PDFs downloaded again, which matters when the same paper is sat by a stream a week later.
- Can I see marking schemes before signing up?
- Yes. Twenty-four complete sample papers are free to download with their marking schemes, and a share of the practice questions show their worked answers on the page.
