    (a) Frequency is the number of complete waves (oscillations/cycles) produced or passing a fixed point per second. It is measured in hertz (Hz). (1 mark) (b) Speed = frequency × wavelength v = f × λ v = 5 Hz × 0.4 m v = 2 m/s (Correct formula = 1 mark, correct substitution = 1 mark, correct answer with unit 2 m/s = 1 mark) (3 marks)

  7. Question 7

  10. Question 10

    5 marks

A wave has a frequency of 50 Hz and a wavelength of 4 metres.

    (a) State the equation that relates the speed, frequency and wavelength of a wave. (1 mark)

    (b) Calculate the speed of the wave. (2 marks)

    (c) State the difference between a transverse wave and a longitudinal wave. (2 marks)

    (5 marks)

    Marking scheme

    (a) Speed = frequency x wavelength (v = f x lambda). (b) v = f x lambda = 50 Hz x 4 m = 200 m/s. The speed of the wave is 200 metres per second. (c) In a transverse wave the vibrations (of the particles or field) are at right angles (perpendicular) to the direction in which the wave travels, e.g. water waves or light. In a longitudinal wave the vibrations of the particles are parallel to (along the same line as) the direction in which the wave travels, e.g. sound waves.

  11. Question 11

    4 marks

A fisherman at the coast notices that waves make his boat bob up and down 20 times in 10 seconds.

    (a) Calculate the frequency of the waves.

    (b) Explain, using the idea of wave motion, why the boat bobs up and down but is not carried out to sea by the waves.
