The Community Meeting

A community hall in a small town. The chief sits at the front with village elders. Villagers fill the benches. There is tension in the air.

CHIEF MUTUA: Thank you all for coming. As you know, the county government plans to build a factory on the land near the river.

MAMA WANJIKU: (Standing up angrily) That land has been ours for generations! Where will we graze our cattle? Where will our children play?

MR. ODHIAMBO: With all due respect, Mama Wanjiku, the factory will bring jobs. Many of our young people are unemployed. This could change their lives.

MAMA WANJIKU: Jobs? What good are jobs if we have no clean water to drink? The factory will pollute our river!

CHIEF MUTUA: (Raising his hand for silence) Both of you raise valid concerns. We must find a balance between development and protecting our environment.

YOUNG MAN: (From the back row) Why can't they build the factory somewhere else? There is empty land on the other side of town.

MR. ODHIAMBO: (Nodding slowly) That is actually a reasonable suggestion. Perhaps we should propose an alternative location to the county government.

CHIEF MUTUA: Good. I will form a committee to present our views. We shall include both those who support the factory and those who oppose it.

(The villagers murmur in agreement. The meeting continues with more discussions.)

Everyone is given a chance to speak, including Mama Wanjiku, Mr. Odhiambo, and the young man from the back. The chief listens to all views and forms a committee that includes people with different opinions. Decisions are made through discussion rather than by one person alone.
