In the beginning, all zebras were pure white. They lived peacefully on the great plains, grazing on the tall grass under the hot African sun.

One day, a young zebra named Zuri grew tired of being white like everyone else. She wanted to be different. She went to the wise old baboon who lived on the mountain.

'Old Baboon,' said Zuri, 'I want to be special. Can you give me a different colour?'

The baboon thought for a moment. 'I can paint you with black stripes,' he said. 'But once I do, you can never go back to being plain white.'

Zuri agreed eagerly. The baboon painted beautiful black stripes all over her body. When Zuri returned to the herd, the other zebras were amazed.

'How beautiful you look!' they exclaimed. One by one, they all went to the baboon to get their own stripes. But the baboon, growing tired, painted each one slightly differently.

That is why, even today, no two zebras have exactly the same pattern of stripes. Each one is unique, just as Zuri wished to be.

And that is how the zebra got its stripes. My story is done.
