The market was alive with colour and noise. Vendors called out their prices, competing for the attention of passing customers. The smell of roasting maize mixed with the fragrance of ripe mangoes and freshly cut sugarcane.
Akinyi pushed her way through the crowd, clutching a small envelope in her hand. Inside was the money she had saved for three months — enough to pay her brother's school fees for the next term. She had worked every weekend at her aunt's shop to earn it.
As she approached the bank, she noticed a crowd gathered around an old woman who had fallen near the entrance. People were simply walking past, ignoring her cries for help.
Akinyi hesitated. She was already late, and the bank would close soon. But she could not ignore the old woman's pain. She knelt down beside her.
'Mama, are you alright? Can you stand?' Akinyi asked gently.
The old woman looked up with tears in her eyes. 'My leg,' she whispered. 'I think it is broken.'
Akinyi looked around desperately. Finally, a boda boda rider agreed to help them get to the hospital. Akinyi accompanied the old woman, holding her hand throughout the journey. By the time they reached the hospital and the old woman was attended to, the bank had already closed.
Akinyi sat outside the hospital, looking at the envelope in her hand. She would have to wait until tomorrow to deposit the money. But as she watched the old woman smile gratefully at her through the window, she knew she had made the right choice.
