Long ago, in a wide grassland, there lived a clever tortoise named Kobe and a proud hare named Sungura. The hare boasted to all the animals that he was the fastest creature in the land. He laughed at the slow tortoise and said that no animal could ever beat him in a race. The other animals were tired of his bragging, but none of them dared to challenge him.
One cool morning, Kobe surprised everyone by accepting the hare's challenge. The animals gathered at the foot of a great hill to watch. When the race began, Sungura shot ahead like the wind and was soon far in front. Feeling certain of victory, he decided to rest under a shady acacia tree, where he quickly fell into a deep sleep.
Meanwhile, Kobe moved forward slowly but steadily. He did not stop to rest or look back. Step by step, he passed the sleeping hare and continued towards the finish line near the river. The watching animals cheered loudly, but the hare slept on, dreaming of the prize he was so sure he would win.
When Sungura finally woke, he raced down the hill in panic, but it was too late. Kobe had already crossed the line. The animals laughed and praised the tortoise for his patience. From that day, Sungura learned that pride and laziness can defeat even the swiftest runner, while steady effort wins the race.
