    (4 marks)

    Marking scheme

    (a) The Prophet (S.A.W.) said: "It is not lawful for a Muslim to forsake (keep away from) his brother for more than three days, such that they meet and one turns away from the other; the better of them is the one who gives the greeting of salaam first." (Bukhari and Muslim). (2 marks) (b) Two lessons (1 mark each): - Muslims should reconcile quickly and not let anger persist beyond three days; cutting off relations is discouraged. - The one who initiates the salaam and reconciliation is the better and more rewarded of the two, so they should compete in making peace. - Maintaining brotherhood and unity (ukhuwah) among believers is a duty. (any two)

  8. Question 8

    6 marks

A Grade 8 learner reads the famous hadith narrated by Umar ibn al-Khattab (R.A.) in which the Prophet (S.A.W.) said: "Actions are but by intentions (innama al-a'malu bi'n-niyyat), and every person will have only what they intended..." (Bukhari and Muslim).

    (a) State the lesson contained in this hadith. (2 marks)

    (b) Using examples, explain how this hadith guides a Muslim's daily conduct. (4 marks)

    (6 marks)

    Marking scheme

    (a) The hadith teaches that the value and reward of every action depend on the intention (niyyah) behind it; deeds are judged by their intentions. (2 marks) (b) A Muslim should perform acts of worship and good deeds sincerely for the sake of Allah (ikhlas) and not for show (riya). For example: praying or giving charity to please Allah, not to be seen by people; a student studying with the intention of benefiting the ummah; migrating or working with a sincere purpose. The Prophet (S.A.W.) continued, "...whoever migrated for Allah and His Messenger, his migration is for Allah and His Messenger; and whoever migrated for worldly gain or a woman to marry, his migration is for that which he migrated." Thus the same outward action earns reward or no reward depending on the intention, so a Muslim purifies his intention before every act. (4 marks)
