  1. Question 1

    1 mark

A learner needs to draw a 6 metre wall on paper using a scale of 1:100. What length on the drawing will represent the wall?

    A. 60 millimetres

    B. 6 metres

    C. 6 millimetres

    D. 600 millimetres

  2. Question 2

    5 marks

A learner is asked to draw a plan of a rectangular garden that measures 6 metres long on a sheet of paper using a scale of 1:50. (a) State what the scale 1:50 means. (2 marks) (b) Calculate the length in centimetres that should be drawn on the paper to represent the 6 metre side, showing your working. (3 marks)

    (5 marks)

    Marking scheme

    (a) A scale of 1:50 means that 1 unit of length on the drawing represents 50 of the same units of the actual (real) object; that is, the drawing is 50 times smaller than the real garden. (b) Working: Real length = 6 m = 600 cm. Drawing length = real length / 50 = 600 cm / 50 = 12 cm. Therefore the 6 metre side should be drawn 12 cm long on the paper.

  3. Question 3

    4 marks

A rectangular garden measures 12 m long by 8 m wide. Using a scale of 1:200, calculate the length and width of the garden as they would appear on the drawing.

  9. Question 9

    5 marks

A learner is asked to draw a plan of the school garden which measures 20 metres long. Because the paper is small, she decides to use a scale of 1:100.

    (a) Explain what the scale 1:100 means. (2 marks)

    (b) Work out the length, in centimetres, that the 20-metre garden will be represented by on her drawing. (2 marks)

    (c) State ONE reason why drawing to scale is necessary in this situation. (1 mark)

    (5 marks)

    Marking scheme

    (a) A scale of 1:100 means that 1 unit of measurement on the drawing represents 100 of the same units on the actual object; i.e. every 1 cm on the paper stands for 100 cm (1 metre) of the real garden. (2 marks) (b) Actual length = 20 m = 2000 cm. Drawing length = actual length / 100 = 2000 / 100 = 20 cm. The 20-metre garden is represented by a line 20 cm long on the drawing. (1 mark for correct method, 1 mark for the answer 20 cm.) (c) Any ONE (1 mark): It allows a large object to be drawn proportionally on a small sheet of paper; it keeps the drawing in correct proportion so the real sizes can be worked out accurately.
