Kiano walked through the village in the early morning mist. The path was muddy from the previous night's rain. He carried a small bag on his back containing his school uniform, a pencil, and a worn-out notebook.
His grandmother had woken him up before dawn. 'Education is your only ticket out of poverty,' she always told him. Kiano believed her. Every morning, he walked eight kilometres to school without complaining.
When he arrived at the school gate, he saw his friend Njeri waiting for him. She looked worried.
'Have you heard?' Njeri whispered. 'The school might close down. They say there is not enough money to pay the teachers.'
Kiano's heart sank. School was the only place where he felt he could dream about a better future. He looked at the old classroom building with its cracked walls and broken windows. Despite its condition, it was his second home.
'We cannot let that happen,' said Kiano quietly. 'We must find a way.'
