Read the passage below and answer questions that follow
Trees are among the most important living things on our planet. They provide oxygen, which all living creatures need to breathe. A single large tree can produce enough oxygen for four people in one day.
Trees also help in fighting climate change. They absorb carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas that contributes to global warming. Forests act as carbon sinks, storing large amounts of carbon in their trunks, branches, and roots.
In addition to their environmental benefits, trees provide food, shelter, and medicine. Many communities depend on forests for their livelihood. Fruits, nuts, and spices come from trees. Timber is used for building houses and making furniture.
Unfortunately, deforestation continues at an alarming rate. Every year, millions of hectares of forest are destroyed for agriculture, logging, and urban development. Planting new trees and protecting existing forests are essential steps in preserving our environment.
