    (b) State ONE safety precaution to observe when using the dye. (1 mark)

    (5 marks)

    Marking scheme

    (a) Any four ordered steps (1 mark each): wash the plain fabric to remove starch; fold and tie/bind sections tightly with string or rubber bands; prepare the dye bath; dip/soak the tied fabric in the dye for the required time; rinse off excess dye; untie the string; dry the fabric (in shade). (b) Any one (1 mark): wear gloves/apron; avoid splashing dye in eyes/mouth; work in a ventilated area; keep dye away from food.

  8. Question 8

    1 mark

  11. Question 11

    6 marks

A learner's first attempt at batik produced dull, uneven colours.

    (a) Give TWO possible reasons why the colour was dull and uneven. (4 marks)

    (b) Suggest ONE way to improve the result next time. (2 marks)

    (6 marks)

    Marking scheme

    (a) Any two explained (2 marks each): the fabric was not washed first so starch/dirt blocked even dye absorption; the dye bath was too weak or the cloth was left in for too short a time; the wax was applied unevenly or too thickly; the dye was not properly dissolved/mixed. (b) Any one (2 marks): wash and prepare the fabric before waxing; apply wax evenly with a suitable tool; use the correct dye strength and soaking time; stir/mix the dye well before use.

  12. Question 12

    1 mark

In a batik lesson, the teacher heats a substance and applies it to fabric to resist the dye in certain areas. What substance is used as the resist in batik?

Fabric decoration can be a source of income for young people in Kenya.

    (a) Name THREE fabric decoration techniques a learner can use to make products for sale. (3 marks)

    (b) Suggest TWO products a learner could make and sell using these techniques. (2 marks)

    (5 marks)

    Marking scheme

    (a) Any three (1 mark each): tie and dye, batik, embroidery, block/screen printing, appliqué, fabric painting. (b) Any two products (1 mark each): T-shirts, scarves, kitenge/kanga wraps, cushion covers, table cloths, bags, aprons, wall hangings.

  15. Question 15

    4 marks

A teacher shows learners two decorated cloths: one made using batik and one made using tie and dye.

    (a) State the resist material used in EACH technique. (2 marks)

    (b) Explain ONE difference in the way the resist is applied in the two techniques. (2 marks)

    (4 marks)

    Marking scheme

    (a) Batik uses hot/melted wax as the resist; tie and dye uses string/thread/rubber bands (tight binding) as the resist (1 mark each). (b) Any valid contrast (2 marks): in batik the wax is drawn or painted onto the flat cloth in a chosen design to block the dye, whereas in tie and dye the cloth is folded and bound tightly so the compressed/covered areas resist the dye - i.e. batik uses an applied wax pattern while tie and dye uses physical binding/pressure.

  16. Question 16

    1 mark

After dyeing a tie and dye T-shirt, the string is removed to reveal the pattern. What kind of pattern typically appears where the fabric was tightly tied?

    A. A solid, even block of the dye colour

    B. A raised embroidered texture

    C. Lighter, undyed circular or radiating patterns

    D. Straight printed letters

    A. To remove starch and dirt so the dye is absorbed evenly

    B. To shrink it so no dye is needed

    C. To make the fabric permanently waterproof

    D. To bleach out its natural colour completely
