18 Grade 7 Pre-Technical Studies questions on Introduction to Drawing, with worked marking schemes. 18 questions are available on this topic in full.
Question 1
4 marks(a) State two qualities of a good technical drawing.
(b) Give one reason why neatness is important in technical drawing.
(4 marks)
Marking scheme
(a) 1 mark each: accurate/correct dimensions; neat and clean; clear/legible lines and lettering; correct line types used; well proportioned. Any 2. (b) 2 marks: neatness makes the drawing easy to read and interpret correctly, preventing errors during production/manufacture.
Question 2
1 markAmina wants to measure and draw an angle of 65 degrees. Which instrument should she use?
A. Compass
B. Protractor
C. Divider
D. French curve

1 markA learner is preparing a neat technical drawing for a project. Why is a hard pencil such as a 2H preferred for drawing construction and guide lines?
A. It produces very dark, thick lines that cannot be erased
B. It produces light, thin lines that are easy to erase later
C. It cannot be used on drawing paper at all
D. It makes lines that are wider than a marker pen

1 markWhich pencil grade is HARDEST and produces the lightest, thinnest lines suitable for construction lines?
A. 2B
B. HB
C. 2H
D. 4B

6 marksName three types of lines used in technical drawing and state the use of each.
(6 marks)
Marking scheme
3 lines x (name 1 mark + use 1 mark) = 6 marks. Examples: Continuous thick line - visible outlines/edges; Short dashed thin line - hidden edges/details; Chain thin (long-short-long) line - centre lines/lines of symmetry; Continuous thin line - dimension/projection/leader lines; Continuous thin wavy line - short break/irregular boundary. Any 3.
Question 6
4 marksA learner draws using a blunt, dark HB pencil and produces thick smudged construction lines. Suggest two corrections she should make and explain why.
(4 marks)
Marking scheme
2 corrections x 2 marks (correction + reason): Use a harder pencil e.g. 2H for construction lines - gives light thin lines that are easy to erase; Sharpen/keep the pencil sharp - produces fine consistent lines; Keep hand/T-square clean to avoid smudging - keeps drawing neat and readable. Any 2 with reason.
Question 7
1 markWhich type of line is used to show the exact position of the centre of a circle in a drawing?
A. A continuous wavy line
B. A short dashed line
C. A continuous thick line
D. A long chain thin line

4 marksExplain the difference between a T-square and a set square as used in technical drawing.
(4 marks)
Marking scheme
2 marks each: A T-square is used together with the drawing board to draw horizontal lines and to guide/support set squares along the board edge. A set square is a triangular instrument (45 or 30/60 degrees) used to draw vertical and inclined lines at fixed angles. Accept the roles of each described clearly.
