(A village setting. MAMA NJERI is seated outside her hut, sorting beans. Her daughter WANJIKU enters, looking excited.)

WANJIKU: (Breathlessly) Mother! Mother! I have wonderful news!

MAMA NJERI: (Looks up, concerned) What is it, my child? Why are you running like a frightened antelope?

WANJIKU: The headteacher has selected me to represent our school at the national science competition!

MAMA NJERI: (Standing up, overjoyed) Praise be to the Almighty! My daughter, I am so proud of you.

WANJIKU: But Mother, I will need money for transport and accommodation in Nairobi.

MAMA NJERI: (Her face falls) Nairobi? That is far away. And money... (She sighs heavily) Let me speak to your father when he returns from the market.

WANJIKU: (Pleading) Please, Mother. This is my chance to make something of myself.

MAMA NJERI: (Firmly but kindly) I know, my child. We will find a way. Education is the key to a better future.
