Kino opened the great oyster and there it lay, the greatest pearl in the world. It was as large as a seagull's egg. It was the greatest pearl in the world. His face was suddenly suffused with a terrible delight.

The news of the pearl spread quickly through the small fishing village. Everyone came to see it. The priest came, the doctor came, and even the pearl dealers sent their agents. They all wanted something from Kino.

But with the pearl came danger. Thieves attacked Kino's hut in the night. His canoe was destroyed. His house was burned. Yet Kino refused to give up the pearl, believing it would bring a better life for his family.

In the end, Kino stood at the shore with his wife Juana. They looked at the pearl — once so beautiful, now stained with blood and sorrow. Together, they threw it back into the sea.
