Wanjiru lived in a small village near a green hill. Every morning, she woke up before sunrise to help her mother fetch water from the river. The path was long and dusty, but Wanjiru never complained. She carried a small clay pot on her head and walked carefully so that she would not spill a single drop.
One day, while walking back home, Wanjiru noticed that the river had become very low. The water was muddy and smelled bad. She remembered her teacher saying that people upstream were cutting down trees and throwing rubbish into the water. Wanjiru felt worried because her family depended on the river for everything they needed.
That afternoon, Wanjiru told her friends about the dirty river. Together, they decided to do something useful. They formed a small club called the River Guardians. Each member promised to plant trees along the riverbank and to teach others not to throw waste into the water. They were determined to protect their precious river.
Within a few months, the riverbank looked greener and fresher. The young trees gave shade, and the water became clearer than before. Wanjiru felt proud of what the children had achieved. She learned that even young people can make a big difference when they work together for a good cause.
