Long ago, when the world was young, the tortoise and the hare lived near the same green hill. The hare was very fast and proud of his swift legs, and he often laughed at the slow tortoise. He boasted to all the animals that no creature could ever beat him in a race. The patient tortoise listened quietly and finally decided to challenge the boastful hare.
On the morning of the race, all the animals gathered to watch. When the race began, the hare shot forward like the wind and quickly left the tortoise far behind. Feeling certain of his easy win, the hare decided to rest under a shady tree. He yawned, stretched out his legs, and soon fell into a deep and comfortable sleep.
Meanwhile, the tortoise kept moving forward, one slow but steady step at a time. He did not stop to rest or look back. While the hare snored beneath the tree, the determined tortoise passed him quietly and continued towards the finish line. The other animals watched in surprise as the slow tortoise drew closer and closer to winning the race.
When the hare finally woke up, he sprang to his feet and dashed towards the finish line. But it was too late, for the tortoise had already crossed it. All the animals cheered loudly for the humble winner. The hare hung his head in shame, having learned that being proud and lazy can lose what speed alone could easily win.
