4 marksDescribe the arm and leg action of the breaststroke.
(4 marks)
Marking scheme
Arms (2 marks): both arms move together - sweep outwards and then pull inwards/downwards in front of the chest in a heart-shaped/circular motion, then stretch forward again. Legs (2 marks): a frog-like (whip) kick - legs bend at the knees, feet drawn up, then thrust out and back and squeezed together. Award marks for correct description of each.
Question 11
6 marksBefore a swimming lesson at a public pool, the physical education teacher gives the Grade 7 learners safety instructions to prevent accidents. State SIX safety rules the learners should observe in and around the swimming pool.
(6 marks)
Marking scheme
Any SIX of the following safety rules: - Never swim alone; always swim where there is a lifeguard or qualified supervisor present. - Do not run on the wet poolside as it is slippery and one can fall. - Do not dive into shallow water (dive only in the marked deep end where allowed). - Warm up / do warm-up exercises before entering the water. - Do not push, dunk or play rough games that could cause drowning. - Do not enter the water immediately after a heavy meal. - Obey the lifeguard and all pool rules/warning signs at all times. - Stay within the depth that matches your swimming ability; beginners stay in the shallow end. - Do not swim when unwell or too tired. - Enter the water slowly/feet first when unsure of the depth.
Question 12
1 markThe instructor teaches a stroke where both arms sweep out and pull inwards together while the legs make a frog-like kick. This stroke is the:

6 marksA group of Grade 7 learners visits a swimming pool for their first physical education swimming lesson. The teacher emphasises safety before allowing anyone into the water.
(a) State THREE safety rules the learners should observe at the swimming pool. (3 marks)
(b) Explain why warming up before entering the water is important. (3 marks)
(6 marks)
Marking scheme
(a) Any three of: never swim alone, always swim with a partner or under supervision; do not run on the wet poolside to avoid slipping; do not dive into shallow water; do not push others into the pool; only swim within your depth/ability; obey the instructor and lifeguard at all times; do not swim immediately after eating a heavy meal. (b) Warming up raises the body temperature and increases blood flow to the muscles, making them more flexible. This prepares the muscles and joints for activity, reduces the risk of cramps and injuries such as muscle strains, and reduces the shock of entering cold water.
Question 14
1 markA learner sees a friend struggling in deep water. According to pool safety rules, the safest first action for a Grade 7 learner is to:
A. Splash water toward the friend
B. Ignore it and continue swimming
C. Shout for the lifeguard/instructor and reach out with a pole or float
D. Jump in immediately to grab the friend

6 marksA learner wants to become confident in water. Arrange and explain the following in a logical learning order: floating, gliding, and swimming a full stroke.
(6 marks)
Marking scheme
Correct order (2 marks): floating -> gliding -> swimming a full stroke. Explanation (4 marks, ~1-2 marks each): Floating - first learn to stay on the water surface and relax/trust buoyancy; Gliding - push off and move smoothly across the surface to feel body position and streamline; Full stroke - once confident floating and gliding, add coordinated arm and leg actions with breathing to swim a stroke. Award marks for correct sequence and reasoning.
Question 16
1 markA learner practises staying afloat by moving the arms and legs to keep the head above water without moving forward. This survival skill is known as:
A. Gliding
B. Treading water
C. Sprinting
