6 marksTwo Grade 7 streams play a friendly football match. The referee makes several decisions that some learners do not understand.
(a) State the number of players in a standard football team on the pitch, including the goalkeeper. (1 mark)

(a) Eleven (11) players. (b) A player is in an offside position when, at the moment the ball is played to them by a teammate, they are in the opponents' half and nearer to the opponents' goal line than both the ball and the second-last opponent (normally the last defender, since the goalkeeper is usually the last). Being in an offside position is not itself an offence; the player is only penalised if they then become involved in active play. A player is not offside if they are in their own half or level with the second-last opponent. (c) Any one of: tripping an opponent, kicking or attempting to kick an opponent, pushing an opponent, holding an opponent, deliberately handling the ball, or making a dangerous/reckless tackle.
