  1. Question 1

    1 mark

A learner moved a ball closer to a torch and its shadow on the wall became bigger. The shadow became bigger because the ball:

    A. Moved away from the light source

    B. Became transparent

    (b) State the property of light that makes it possible for shadows to form. (1 mark)

    (3 marks)

    Marking scheme

    (a) The football is an opaque object; it blocks/stops the light from the torch from reaching the wall, so a dark area (shadow) forms on the wall behind the ball (2 marks). (b) Light travels in straight lines (1 mark).

    (a) Reflection is the bouncing back of light when it hits/strikes a surface (especially a smooth shiny surface) (2 marks). (b) Any one: using a mirror to see our image/appearance; car mirrors/side mirrors; a periscope; shiny surfaces/reflectors on vehicles and bicycles for safety at night (1 mark).

  8. Question 8

    4 marks

A simple experiment can be used to show how light travels. Describe an experiment using three cards with holes (and a candle or torch) to show that light travels in straight lines. (4 marks)

    (4 marks)

    Marking scheme

Make a small hole at the same height in the centre of each of three cards (1 mark). Arrange the three cards in a straight line so the holes are in line, with a candle/torch at one end (1 mark). When you look through the holes you can see the light/flame (1 mark); if one card is moved sideways so the holes are no longer in a straight line, the light can no longer be seen — this shows light travels in straight lines (1 mark).

    (3 marks)

    Marking scheme

The position/height of the sun in the sky changes during the day (1 mark). In the morning the sun is low in the sky, so the stick blocks the light to make a long shadow (1 mark); at noon the sun is high/almost overhead, so the shadow becomes short (1 mark).
