Amani lived in a small village near Lake Victoria. Every morning, before the sun rose high, she walked to the lake with her grandmother to fetch water. The path was narrow and lined with tall grass that brushed against their legs. Amani enjoyed these quiet walks because her grandmother told her wonderful stories about the animals that lived around the lake.
One morning, they saw a group of fishermen pulling their nets onto the shore. The nets were heavy with shining fish that flapped about. The men laughed and sang as they worked together. Amani watched closely and wished she could one day help her father, who was also a fisherman, bring home a big catch.
Her grandmother explained that the lake gave the village many things. It gave them fish to eat and to sell at the market. It gave them water for cooking and washing. It even gave them a cool breeze on hot afternoons. Amani realised that the lake was very important to everyone in her village.
That evening, Amani helped her mother prepare the fish her father had brought home. As the family ate together, she felt thankful. She promised herself that she would always take care of the lake, just as the lake took care of her family and her whole village.
