(a) Muhkamat. Any two of the following, 1 mark each (2 marks): - Their meaning is clear and decisive. - They have only one interpretation. - They can be understood without needing other verses to explain them. - They are described as the foundation (umm al-kitab) of the Qur'an (Q. 3:7). - They mostly deal with beliefs (tawhid), acts of worship, what is lawful and unlawful, and moral teachings. - Rulings and practice are based on them. (b) Mutashabihat. Any two of the following, 1 mark each (2 marks): - Their meaning is not fully clear, or is open to more than one interpretation. - Their full meaning is known only to Allah (S.W.T.), according to the reading of Q. 3:7 held by most scholars. - Many describe the attributes of Allah (S.W.T.) or matters of the unseen (ghaib), for example the Throne and the Hand of Allah. - They include the disjointed letters (al-huruf al-muqatta'at) such as Alif Lam Mim. - They must be understood in the light of the muhkamat. - People with deviation in their hearts follow them to cause discord (Q. 3:7).

4 marksAmina, a Grade 10 learner, comes across a social media post that quotes verses of the Qur'an out of context to encourage young people to join a violent group. Explain two ways in which knowledge of the types of verses would help her respond to the post correctly. (4 marks)
(4 marks)
Marking scheme
Any two of the following, 2 marks each (1 mark for the way and 1 mark for the explanation) (4 marks): - She would know that Q. 3:7 warns against people who follow unclear (mutashabih) verses to cause discord, so she would recognise the post as an attempt at fitnah. - She would know that verses must be understood in the light of the clear (muhkam) verses, which teach justice, mercy and the sanctity of life (for example Q. 5:32), so she would reject a reading that contradicts them. - She would know that a general ('am) verse may be limited by a specific (khaas) verse, by Hadith or by its context, so quoting one verse alone can give a false ruling. - She would know that only qualified scholars can interpret difficult verses, so she would consult her imam, madrasa teacher or IRE teacher instead of accepting the post. - She would understand the need to read verses in context, including their reasons for revelation, and would not share or act on the post. - She would value humility and caution in interpretation, and could report the post and help her peers understand it correctly.
