    Marking scheme

    (a) Any four of the following, 1 mark each (4 marks): - Mention the name of Allah (S.W.T.), saying 'Bismillah, Allahu Akbar', at the time of slaughter (Q. 6:118, 121). - Use a very sharp knife so the animal dies quickly. The Prophet said, 'When you slaughter, slaughter well; let each of you sharpen his blade and spare suffering to the animal' (narrated by Shaddad ibn Aws, Muslim). - Sharpen the knife where the animal cannot see it. - Do not slaughter one animal in sight of another. - Lay the animal gently on its left side, facing the qiblah. - Cut the windpipe, the gullet and the jugular veins swiftly in one motion. - Let the blood drain out completely. - Do not skin the animal, cut it up or break its neck until it is completely dead. - Treat the animal kindly beforehand: give it water and do not drag or frighten it. - The slaughter should be done by a sane person who understands the rules of slaughter, normally a Muslim (meat slaughtered by the People of the Book is also lawful, Q. 5:5). (b) Any one reason, fully explained, 2 marks (identifying the reason 1 mark, explaining it 1 mark): - It reduces the animal's pain and shows ihsan (excellence and kindness) to Allah's creatures, as the hadith of Shaddad ibn Aws commands. - Mentioning Allah's name makes the meat halal and shows that the life is taken only with Allah's permission. - Draining the blood fully makes the meat healthier and keeps it fresh for longer. - It follows the sunnah of the Prophet (P.B.U.H.), which earns reward. - It reminds the Muslim that animals are a trust (amanah) from Allah, to be used responsibly.

    Marking scheme

Any five of the following, 1 mark each (5 marks): - The prohibition is a direct command of Allah (S.W.T.) (Q. 2:173; Q. 5:3; Q. 6:145), not only a health rule, so it does not depend on how the animal is farmed. - Q. 6:145 calls swine flesh impure (rijs). The impurity is in the animal itself, not in its surroundings. - A believer obeys even when the full wisdom is not known. Q. 33:36 says believers have no choice once Allah and His Messenger have decided a matter. - Commands of Allah (S.W.T.) are not limited to one time or place; what was haram in the Prophet's time stays haram. - Clean farming does not remove every health risk: pork can still carry parasites such as the pork tapeworm (Taenia solium) and Trichinella, which cause disease in humans. - Pork is high in fat, which is linked to heart disease and obesity. - The only exception the Qur'an allows is genuine necessity (Q. 2:173), not convenience or changes in farming. - Reasoned conclusion: the argument is not valid, because the ruling rests on revelation and obedience, and health benefits are only part of the wisdom behind it.
