    (6 marks)

    Marking scheme

Any three of the following, 2 marks each (1 mark for the method, 1 mark for how it creates texture) (6 marks): - Sponge dabbing: dabbing hot wax with a sponge leaves a broken, speckled pattern of resisted dots - Dry-brush strokes: a brush with little wax dragged across the fabric leaves streaky, broken marks - Splattering or dripping: flicking or dripping wax from a brush or tjanting leaves irregular spots and drips - Stamping: pressing a stamp (tjap, carved wood, cork or bottle top) dipped in wax repeats a textured motif - Scratching or combing: scraping lines through a wax layer with a comb or stick lets dye into the scratched lines - Layering wax of different thicknesses: thin and thick areas resist dye differently, giving varied tones

  7. Question 7

    6 marks

During peer assessment, a learner's batik showed the faults below. For each fault, explain a likely cause and suggest a remedy.

    (a) Dye had seeped into areas that had been waxed, leaving the motifs blurred. (2 marks)

    (b) Heavy crackle lines ran across the whole fabric, making the motifs hard to see. (2 marks)

    (c) The finished fabric felt stiff and looked greasy. (2 marks) Total: 6 marks

    (6 marks)

    Marking scheme

1 mark for a correct cause and 1 mark for a matching remedy in each part (6 marks): (a) Cause: the wax was too cool or too thin, so it stayed on the surface and did not soak through the fabric. Remedy: keep the wax hot enough to soak in (it looks see-through on the fabric) and wax both sides if needed. (b) Cause: the fabric was crumpled too roughly, or the wax had too much paraffin. Remedy: crumple gently and only where crackle is wanted, and keep the paraffin to beeswax ratio at 2:1 (or add more beeswax). (c) Cause: the wax was not fully removed. Remedy: iron again between fresh absorbent paper until no wax comes out, then wash in hot soapy water or treat with white spirit.

  8. Question 8

    A. Brayer roller

    B. Tjanting

    C. Linocut gouge

    D. Squeegee

    4 marks

Apart from the method used to heat the wax, outline four safety precautions a learner should observe while melting and applying hot wax in batik. (4 marks)

    (4 marks)

    Marking scheme

Any four of the following, 1 mark each (4 marks): - Hold the tjanting or brush over a tray or piece of cloth to catch hot drips - Keep hands and face away from hot wax to avoid burns - Never leave melting wax unattended - Keep the fabric, paper and wax away from naked flames - Stand the wax pot on a firm, level surface with the handle turned inwards - Wear an apron and closed shoes to protect the skin from drips - Work in a well-ventilated area to avoid breathing in wax fumes - Switch off or put out the heat source as soon as the work is finished - Keep a fire blanket or damp sack nearby; never pour water on burning wax - Scrape up wax spills at once to avoid slipping - Do not use cooking utensils for wax; label all wax containers

  10. Question 10

    1 mark

In batik, paraffin wax is mixed with beeswax. What does paraffin wax mainly contribute to the mixture?

    A. Solubility that lets the wax wash out in cold dye

    B. A colour that lightly tints the waxed areas

    C. Flexibility that helps the wax grip the fabric well

    D. Brittleness that lets the wax crack into veins

  11. Question 11

Why is a cold dye bath used to dye a waxed batik fabric?

    A. Cold water helps the fabric absorb more wax

    B. Hot dye would soften and melt the wax resist

    C. Hot dye would stop the wax from cracking

    D. Cold dye gives brighter colours on all fabrics

Describe the procedure for creating a crackled effect on a cotton fabric using batik, from applying the wax to removing it. (6 marks)

    (6 marks)

    Marking scheme

Any six of the following, 1 mark each (6 marks): - Stretch the fabric on a frame, or lay it on newspaper, so that it is held flat - Melt the wax mixture safely (in a double container) - Apply the hot wax with a brush or tjanting over the areas to be crackled, so that it soaks through to the back - Allow the wax to cool and harden completely - Crumple, squeeze or fold the waxed fabric gently so that the wax cracks into fine lines - Dip the fabric in a cold dye bath so that the dye enters the cracks - Leave it for the recommended time, then rinse in cold water - Dry the fabric away from heat - Remove the wax by rubbing, ironing between absorbent paper or using white spirit

  13. Question 13

    1 mark

When preparing batik wax, the paraffin and beeswax are heated in a double container (one pot standing in another pot of water) rather than directly over the heat. Why?

    A. To make the wax set more quickly on the cloth

    B. To blend the colour of paraffin with beeswax

    C. To keep the wax from sticking to the fabric fibres

    D. To stop the wax overheating and catching fire
