(4 marks)
Marking scheme
Any two of the following, 2 marks each (1 mark for the factor, 1 mark for the explanation) (4 marks): - Condition of materials: clean, dry materials last, while damp or dirty materials grow mould and decay. - Perishable organic materials: fresh leaves, fruit peels or flowers rot, shrink or change colour, while dried or non-perishable materials last longer. - Quality of paper: thin, low-quality paper such as newsprint yellows, fades in sunlight and tears easily, while thicker or glossy paper keeps its colour longer. - Weight of materials: heavy items such as stones or many bottle tops pull away and fall off, while light items stay fixed; materials should be matched in weight to what the work can hold. - Materials that attract pests: untreated seeds, grains or food-based items may be eaten by insects or rodents, while synthetic or treated materials are not. - Colourfastness: materials with dyes that fade or run when exposed to light or moisture spoil the work over time, while colourfast materials keep their appearance.

5 marksA Grade 10 class is making a mixed-media collage on the theme of environmental conservation.
(a) Name three materials from the local environment, other than paper, that the learners could use, and state the texture effect each would give. (3 marks)
(b) Explain how the learners could create variation of tone in the collage. (2 marks)
(5 marks)
Marking scheme
(a) Any three of the following, 1 mark each for a material correctly matched to its texture (3 marks): - Dry banana fibre or sisal: rough, fibrous/stringy texture. - Sand or sawdust: fine, grainy texture. - Seeds, beans or maize grains: bumpy/knobbly texture. - Dry leaves: veined, crinkly texture. - Twigs or grass stalks: linear, ridged texture. - Feathers: soft, fluffy texture. - Eggshells: cracked, crazed texture. - Bottle tops: ridged/raised texture. - Fabric pieces: woven or smooth texture. (b) 2 marks: any one method well explained (2 marks), or two methods stated (1 mark each): - Arrange materials of naturally different shades, e.g. light sand beside dark soil or dark seeds, grading from light to dark. - Overlap thin or translucent layers so that areas with more layers appear darker. - Vary the closeness of pieces: closely packed pieces appear darker, widely spaced pieces lighter. - Tint some materials with diluted water colour to make lighter and darker versions.
Question 15
4 marksThe school Health Club has asked art learners to make collages for a campaign against drug and substance abuse. Explain two ways in which the collage technique can be used to highlight this contemporary issue. (4 marks)
(4 marks)
Marking scheme
Any two of the following, 2 marks each (1 mark for the way, 1 mark for the explanation) (4 marks): - Juxtaposition: placing contrasting images side by side, e.g. a healthy, studying learner beside a learner affected by drugs, makes the consequences clear at a glance. - Superimposition: layering images, e.g. a cigarette or bottle over a face or a school, creates a symbolic message that drugs destroy lives and futures. - Words and slogans: cut-out letters and headlines from newspapers and magazines can be combined with images to deliver a direct message. - Use of real materials: empty cigarette packets or bottle tops (cleaned and safely handled) give the message a powerful, realistic impact. - Colour and texture: strong colour contrast, dark tones or rough textures attract attention and create a mood of danger or warning. - Collages are cheap to make from recyclable materials and quick to produce, so many can be displayed around the school to reach a wide audience.
