Question 1
2 marksExplain why a company that packs milk in cylindrical tins is interested in the total surface area of each tin.
(2 marks)
Marking scheme
1. The total surface area gives the amount of metal sheet needed per tin, which determines the cost of materials and helps the company use the least metal for a given capacity (1 mark). 2. It also determines the size of the label or printed wrapper that must cover the tin (1 mark). Accept any other valid reason tied to area, e.g. the amount of coating or lacquer applied to the surface.

1 markA spherical plastic ball used in a school games lesson has a radius of 10.5 cm. Taking , what is its surface area?
A. 346.5 cm²
B. 1 386 cm²
C. 4 851 cm²
D. 693 cm²

2 marksDistinguish between the curved surface area and the total surface area of a closed cylinder.
(2 marks)
Marking scheme
1. Curved surface area is the area of the rectangular sheet that wraps round the cylinder only, given by 2πrh (1 mark). 2. Total surface area is the curved surface area together with the areas of the two circular ends, given by (1 mark).
Question 9
1 markA decorated conical hat made for a cultural day has a base radius of 7 cm and a slant height of 25 cm. Taking , what is the area of the material forming the curved surface only?
