(2) Example: listening to the first minute of a news bulletin simply to tell what the item is about (1 mark). (3) Listening for specific information means searching the text for particular items such as names, dates, prices or figures (1 mark). 3. Question 3

    5 marks

Describe five strategies a learner can use in order to listen intensively to a recorded interview and answer detailed questions on it afterwards.

    (5 marks)

    Marking scheme

Award 1 mark each for any five: (1) Read the questions before the recording begins so as to know exactly what to listen for. (2) Remove or move away from distractions and sit where the recording is clearly audible. (3) Write short notes in key words, figures and abbreviations rather than full sentences, so as not to fall behind. (4) Hold back from arguing with or judging the speaker while listening, since rehearsing one's own reply causes details to be missed. (5) Use the second playing to fill the gaps left in the notes rather than starting the notes afresh. (6) Check names, numbers and dates immediately, as these are the details most easily confused. Max 5 marks.
