4 marksA school intends to convert one of its classrooms into a computer laboratory. Explain four factors that should be considered when choosing the room.
(4 marks)
Marking scheme
Award 1 mark for each factor correctly named and explained, to a maximum of 4: - Reliable, earthed power supply - the room must have enough properly earthed sockets so machines are not damaged by faulty wiring or overloaded extension cables. - Security - the room should have a lockable door and grilled windows because the equipment is costly and easily stolen. - Freedom from dust and ventilation - a dusty or hot room causes fans to clog and machines to overheat, so a cool, dust-free room is chosen. - Adequate space - enough floor area for benches, cabling and free movement of learners between machines. - Suitable lighting - light that does not fall directly on the screens, since glare strains the eyes. - Away from flooding or water sources - dampness damages electronic components. Accept any four.
Question 4
3 marksDescribe three adjustments a learner should make when setting up a computer workstation so as to avoid body strain during a long practical lesson.
(3 marks)
Marking scheme
Award 1 mark for each adjustment correctly described, to a maximum of 3: - Adjust the chair so that the feet rest flat on the floor and the back is supported upright by the backrest. - Place the keyboard and mouse so that the forearms are roughly level and the wrists are straight, not bent upwards. - Sit about an arm's length from the screen and tilt or turn it so that light from windows or lamps does not reflect on it. - Set the screen so that its top edge is at or just below eye level, so that the neck is not bent forward or tilted back. Do not credit answers about the room itself, or about resting habits, rather than the way the learner's own workstation is arranged.
