  2. Question 2

    4 marks

Distinguish between Community Service Learning and ordinary community service.

    (4 marks)

    Marking scheme

Award 1 mark per valid point of contrast, maximum 4. (i) CSL is tied to curriculum learning outcomes, while ordinary community service need not be linked to any course of study. (ii) CSL requires structured reflection; ordinary community service often ends when the task ends. (iii) In CSL the learner is expected to gain competences (benefit is two-way); in ordinary community service the main intended beneficiary is the community. (iv) CSL is planned, supervised and assessed by the school; ordinary community service may be informal or voluntary with no assessment. (v) CSL involves the community in identifying the need; ordinary service may be decided by the givers alone. Accept any other valid contrast.
