Question 1
4 marksA maize farmer in Trans Nzoia has applied ammonium sulphate fertiliser to the same plot every season for many years. Explain the effect this has on the soil and suggest what the farmer should do about it.
(4 marks)
Marking scheme
The soil becomes increasingly acidic / its pH falls (1). This is because the fertiliser leaves an acidic residue, releasing hydrogen ions into the soil (1). Strongly acidic soil locks up plant nutrients and harms soil organisms, so crop yields drop (1). The farmer should apply agricultural lime (calcium oxide, calcium hydroxide or calcium carbonate) to neutralise the acidity (1). Accept for the last mark: test the soil pH first and alternate with a non-acidifying fertiliser.

6 marksDescribe how you would prepare dry crystals of sodium chloride in the laboratory, starting with dilute hydrochloric acid and dilute sodium hydroxide solution.
(6 marks)
Marking scheme
Measure a known volume of the sodium hydroxide solution into a clean conical flask or beaker and add two to three drops of a suitable indicator, for example methyl orange (1). Add the dilute hydrochloric acid from a measuring cylinder a little at a time, swirling, until the indicator just changes colour, and record the volume of acid used (1). Repeat the procedure using the same volumes of alkali and acid but without adding any indicator, so that the salt is not contaminated by the indicator (1). Pour the neutral mixture into an evaporating dish and heat it gently to evaporate about two thirds of the water, until a saturated solution is obtained (1). Remove the dish from the flame and allow the solution to cool slowly so that crystals form (1). Filter or decant off the remaining liquid and dry the crystals between filter papers (1).
Question 16
1 markZinc granules are added to dilute hydrochloric acid and the gas given off is collected in a test tube. Which test confirms the identity of this gas?
A. It turns limewater milky.
B. It turns moist red litmus paper blue.
C. It burns with a pop sound when a lighted splint is applied.
D. It relights a glowing wooden splint.

4 marksDistinguish between a strong acid and a weak acid, and give one example of each.
(4 marks)
Marking scheme
A strong acid ionises completely (or almost completely) in water, giving a high concentration of hydrogen ions (1). A weak acid ionises only partially in water, so only a small fraction of its molecules release hydrogen ions (1). Example of a strong acid: hydrochloric acid / nitric acid / sulphuric acid (1). Example of a weak acid: ethanoic acid / citric acid / carbonic acid (1).
Question 22
1 markWhich statement about a concentrated solution of ethanoic acid is correct?
A. It has no effect on litmus paper because ethanoic acid is weak.
B. It is a strong acid because it is concentrated.
C. It contains a large amount of acid in a given volume but is still only partially ionised.
D. Its pH must be 7 because ethanoic acid comes from plant material.

4 marksDistinguish between a base and an alkali. Name one base that is not an alkali and describe how you would show that it is a base.
(4 marks)
Marking scheme
A base is a substance (usually a metal oxide or hydroxide) that neutralises an acid to give a salt and water only (1). An alkali is a base that is soluble in water and produces hydroxide ions in solution (1). Example of a base that is not an alkali: copper(II) oxide (accept iron(III) oxide, lead(II) oxide) (1). Warm the solid with dilute sulphuric acid; it dissolves to give a blue solution (a salt) and water, with no gas evolved, showing it has neutralised the acid (1).
Question 24
1 markAn extract prepared from hibiscus petals turns red in lemon juice and green in a solution of washing soda. When a few drops of the extract are added to a solution of bar soap, the mixture turns green. This shows that the soap solution is
A. alkaline.
B. acidic.
C. neutral.
D. a strong acid that has been diluted.

A. Ethanoic acid contains no hydrogen ions at all.
B. Ethanoic acid is only partially ionised, so fewer ions are present to carry the current.
C. Ethanoic acid molecules are too large to move between the electrodes.
D. The ethanoic acid is more dilute than the hydrochloric acid.

5 marksA laboratory technician needs to dilute concentrated sulphuric acid. Outline the correct procedure and state the safety precautions to be observed.
(5 marks)
Marking scheme
Add the concentrated acid slowly to the water, never water to the acid (1). This is because dilution is strongly exothermic, and pouring water onto the acid causes violent boiling and spitting of the hot acid (1). Stir the mixture continuously while adding the acid, and allow it to cool before use (1). Wear safety goggles, a laboratory coat and gloves, and work at the bench in a well ventilated room (1). If acid spills on the skin, wash immediately with plenty of running water and then apply dilute sodium hydrogencarbonate solution (1).
