KJSEA Social Studies, CRE, IRE and HRE: How Single-Paper Subjects Are Assessed

Not every KJSEA subject splits into two papers the way English, Kiswahili, and Integrated Science do. Social Studies & Life Skills (907) and the three Religious Education options — Christian (908), Islamic (909), and Hindu (910) — are each assessed as a single standalone paper. For schools setting mock exams in these subjects, that's actually good news: the structure is simpler, and once you understand it for one of these subjects, you understand it for the other three as well, because they share the same underlying shape.
907 Social Studies & Life Skills
Social Studies is a single paper, sat in 1 hour 30 minutes, with two sections.
| Section | Format | Marks |
|---|---|---|
| Section A | 20 MCQ | 20 |
| Section B | Structured questions + an extended essay-style question | Remaining marks |
Section A's 20 MCQs are confirmed at 20 marks. Section B moves into structured questions and includes an essay-length item — a question requiring a sustained, extended written response rather than a short answer. Learners answer all questions; there is no optional section and no choice of questions to skip.
There's also no project component and no practical component to 907 — it is purely a written paper, split between an objective section and a structured-plus-essay section.
908/909/910: CRE, IRE, HRE
Christian Religious Education (908), Islamic Religious Education (909), and Hindu Religious Education (910) are each standalone papers as well, and each is 1 hour 30 minutes long, worth 80 marks total. A learner sits only the one paper matching their own faith — never more than one, and never a combined "RE" paper at this level.
| Paper | Faith | Duration | Marks | Sections |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 908 | Christian (CRE) | 1h30m | 80 | A: MCQ, B: structured + essay-style |
| 909 | Islamic (IRE) | 1h30m | 80 | A: MCQ, B: structured + essay-style |
| 910 | Hindu (HRE) | 1h30m | 80 | A: MCQ, B: structured + essay-style |
The key fact here is that these three papers are structurally identical to one another. Section A is MCQ-based, Section B is structured questions plus an essay-style item, in all three papers, with the same duration and the same 80-mark total. The only thing that differs between 908, 909, and 910 is the religious content being examined — not the format, not the timing, not the mark allocation, not the balance between objective and extended-response sections.
Why "structurally identical, content differs" matters for schools
This distinction is genuinely useful when a school is setting its own mock exams. Because CRE, IRE, and HRE share one structural template, a school doesn't need to invent three separate paper designs — it needs one well-built structural template (Section A MCQ, Section B structured + essay, 1h30m, 80 marks) applied three times with faith-appropriate content swapped in for each.
This also means schools should assess their internal question-setting capacity for these subjects together, not separately. If a school's CRE paper-setting is strong — clear Section A distractors, well-scaffolded Section B structured items, a properly weighted essay question — the same template and the same quality bar apply directly to IRE and HRE, with only the subject-matter expertise changing.
For 907 Social Studies, the same general two-part logic applies even though the total marks and duration differ slightly from the RE papers: an objective section for breadth, followed by a structured-and-essay section for depth. Question-setters should apply the same command-verb discipline across both — MCQ items testing precise recall and application, Section B items using verbs like explain why, compare, analyse, discuss, and investigate to push beyond recall into reasoning, especially in the essay-style component.
A shared setting checklist
Whether setting 907, 908, 909, or 910, the same checks apply:
- Section A MCQs should test breadth of content with realistic distractors, not trick wording
- Section B structured items should escalate in demand, ending in the essay-style question
- The essay-style question should use analytical command verbs, not simple recall prompts
- All questions are compulsory — there is no optional choice in any of these four papers
- For CRE/IRE/HRE specifically, only the content changes across the three faiths; the paper's shape stays fixed
Takeaway
907 Social Studies is a single 1h30m paper with a confirmed 20-mark MCQ Section A and a structured-plus-essay Section B. The three Religious Education papers — 908, 909, 910 — are single 1h30m, 80-mark papers with an identical Section A/Section B shape, differing only in faith content. Recognising that CRE, IRE, and HRE are the same paper wearing different content lets a school reuse one solid template across all three, rather than reinventing the format each time.
